Interview with Azar Nafisi

Azar Nafisi is among the world’s most notable authors. Her first book in English, Reading Lolita in Tehran, was on the New York Times bestseller list for over 100 weeks and has been translated to 32 languages. Her latest work Republic of Imagination: America in Three Books is an impassioned plea to keep the humanities and civic education alive as bulwarks against repression and complacency.
This interview with Tavaana co-founder and co-director Mariam Memarsadeghi was filmed at the Freer and Sackler Galleries in Washington, D.C. In addition to an extensive collection of Iranian art, the Galleries host an annual Norouz celebration as well as an Iranian film festival.

What Tavaana Students Have to Say

I now have a better understanding of what is happening inside my own community. I realized what the root of most of our problems is, and also from now on what direction I should take… my next step from this course will be transforming my life from that a slave to that of a citizen.
