How to Not Create a New Cyber Plutocracy

In this lecture, Jaron Lanier describes how technology enabled the concentration of information and wealth in the hands of a small minority, disempowering the middle class. In order to fight this concentration of power, Lanier proposes a system of micropayments to the original creators of valuable online content used by companies like Google.

Jaron Lanier is a computer scientist who pioneered research into virtual reality. He has had a long and varied career in technology and is currently a partner architect at Microsoft Research. His book You Are Not a Gadget offers a critique of the negative effects of the Internet on modern society.

What Tavaana Students Have to Say

I give my utmost thanks to Tavaana for these truly useful and constructive courses. In every class I have taken, I have seen students taking part not only from inside and outside Iran but from Afghanistan and Tajikistan as well. I believe that Tavaana's efforts are doing more good for Persian speaking people than anything else currently being offered.
