Introduction to Digital Safety

This course trains participants in ways to keep themselves and their colleagues safe online. The course covers, in ‘how-to’ fashion, topics such as malware, viruses, e-mail and web browser security, protection from spyware and spam, Internet filtering in Iran, and secure circumvention of internet censorship. This course covers the latest news about digital issues in 2013.

In June 2013, Tavaana offered a special round of this course: "Lessons from Previous Iranian Elections for Digital Activists." In addition to the regular topics in the digital safety curriculum, this course covered:

  • Promoting digital safety for activists during campaigns
  • Lessons in digital safety from the 2009 elections and their aftermath
  • Introduction to open-source software for civic and political activists
  • Using smartphones for campaign advertising
