Institute of International Education- Scholar Rescue Fund

Fellowships For Threatened Scholars Around the World

The Scholar Rescue Fund® formalizes an unwavering commitment to academic freedom that the Institute of International Education (IIE) has demonstrated for over 90 years.  Since 2002, the Scholar Rescue Fund has assisted 436 scholars from 46 countries, placing them at over 250 host institutions in 40 countries around the world.

   

AWID

This Scholarships List will be of interest to those looking for scholarships, grants and fellowships in the field of international development, including in areas such as human rights, gender equality, minority rights and other social justice-related issues.

Most opportunities listed aim to support individuals, rather than organizations or projects, and are intended for junior development practitioners, activists and students. While the majority of fellowships are for countries in the global North (primarily the USA), they seek to attract applicants from around the world.

   

IHRN

International Human Rights Scholarships: The International Human Rights Network (IHRN) delivers annual training programs on human rights based approaches and on human rights fieldwork.

These programs are aimed at building the capacity of civil society activists, government, donor and UN development officials from around the world.

IHRN offers a limited number of scholarships to enable suitably qualified persons to participate.

Houtan Scholarships

The Houtan Scholarships for Iranian Students deadline is Oct. 1.
Iran, which was once the birthplace of the Persian Empire the largest empire in the world undoubtedly, has one of the richest histories and cultures in the entire world. In an attempt to spread the word of the abundant Iranian culture, the Houtan Foundation offers scholarship to students from all origins, Iranian and non-Iranian, who have high academic performance and proven interest in promoting Iran’s great culture, heritage, language and civilization. The candidates for the award must demonstrate leadership ability and the desire to make a difference in the society, where they reside. The Houtan Foundation has a strong interest in each of these student's achievements throughout the scholarship period and beyond, as the foundation’s goal is to participate in each student’s success.

At the present time, the Houtan Foundation offers an award of $2,500 per semester which will be given for a graduate school education for the selected applicant. The award will be offered each fall and spring semester. Please submit the application no later than June 1st  for fall semester and Oct. 1st for spring semester.

2014-2015 Hurford Youth Fellowship Program
The World Movement for Democracy is accepting applications for the 2014-2015 Hurford Youth Fellowship program in Washington, D.C. During their four-month fellowships, fellows will have the opportunity to build their leadership skills and benefit from and contribute to, the development of the World Youth Movement for Democracy. All fellows are in residence at the World Movement Secretariat at the National Endowment for Democracy. Youth leaders up to the age of thirty with a demonstrated interest in the advancement of democracy are welcome to apply. Columbia College Scholarships

Columbia College offers about 20 scholarships and awards to outstanding international students. The awards are one time cash grants and 25% - 100% tuition reduction.

 

Iowa State University Scholarships

International Student Ambassador Scholarships are awarded to incoming international students with exceptional leadership qualities and a desire to positively represent both their home country and Iowa State University to prospective students. The awards range from $4000 - $7000 and are renewable

 

Michigan University Scholarships

Michigan University provides a number of scholarship and grants to deserving international students at the undergraduate and postgraduate level.

 

 York University Scholarships

The University of York offers competitive scholarships to overseas Master and PHD students. The awards cover partial to full tuition fees.

 

New York University Wagner Scholarships

All international postgraduate student applicants at NYU Wagner are automatically considered for all merit-based scholarships, as the University gives equal consideration to scholarship applicants from within the United States and abroad.

 

National Science Foundation (NSF)

The National Science Foundation funds research and education in most fields of science and engineering. It does this through grants, and cooperative agreements to more than 2,000 colleges, universities, K-12 school systems, businesses, informal science organizations and other research organizations throughout the United States. NSF receives approximately 40,000 proposals each year for research, education and training projects, of which approximately 11,000 are funded. In addition, the Foundation receives several thousand applications for graduate and postdoctoral fellowships.

AAUW(formerly known as the American Association of University Women) awards international fellowships for full-time study or research in the United States to women who are not US citizens or permanent residents. The scholarships are worth $18,000 for Masters, $20,000 for PHD and $30,000 for Postdoctoral students. 

 

Amherst College Scholarships

Amherst College provides assistance to financial needs of international students. Once your financial need is determined, a financial aid award that is equal to your need will be offered. This award is sometimes called an “aid package” because it may include both self-help (employment) and gift aid (scholarships and grants).

 

Global South Scholar-in-Residence Program

This fellowship is open to outstanding young professors from universities from developing and emerging countries pursuing advanced research in areas bridging the fields of international and development studies, broadly defined, and working in disciplines such as anthropology, history, law, politics and political science, and economics.

 

Edmund S. Muskie Graduate Fellowship Program

The Edmund S. Muskie Graduate Fellowship Program brings emerging leaders in key professional fields from Eurasia to the United States for one to two years of graduate study.

 

Erasmus Mundus Program

The Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA) is responsible for the management of certain parts of the EU's funding programs in the fields of education, culture, audiovisual, sport, citizenship and volunteering.

Erasmus Mundus aims to enhance quality in higher education through scholarships and academic cooperation between Europe and the rest of the world.

 

The OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID)

OFID’s Scholarship Program sponsors outstanding young students from developing countries who wish to study for Master’s degree in a development related discipline from an accredited college/university around the world.

Coursera

Coursera partners with over 70 of the top universities and organizations in the world to offer free online courses. Coursera offers classes in a wide range of topics, spanning the humanities, medicine, biology, social sciences, mathematics, business, computer science, and many others. Anyone can sign up for a course, interact with other students and create in-person or virtual study sessions.

edX

edXoffers free online classes from over 20 top-tier schools around the world including Harvard University, Georgetown University, MIT, the University of Toronto and the University of Hong Kong. Students can chose from a wide variety of courses on law, history, science, engineering, business, social sciences, computer science, public health, and artificial intelligence. Anyone can enroll in edX's interactive courses. edX's learning platform allows students to take classes at their own pace - anywhere, anytime - and to interact with classmates using the latest in peer-to-peer learning technology. 

Online Courses

The project Onlinecourses.com is a free and comprehensive resource that is a collection of open college courses that spans videos, audio lectures, and notes given by professors at Harvard, Princeton and MIT. It offers highly relevant courses such as iPhone Application Development from Stanford and Cyber Humor from Oxford.

Stanford University

This course “Democratic Development” is primarily intended for individuals in college or beyond, with some academic background or preparation in political science or the social sciences. However, it seeks to be accessible and useful to a diverse international audience, including educators at the secondary and college levels, government officials, development professionals, civil society leaders, journalists, bloggers, activists, and individuals involved in a wide range of activities and professions related to the development and deepening of democracy.

Now, MIT wants to up the ante on the certification of free courses. Starting next spring, the university, already famous for its OpenCourseWare project, will launch MITx, an e-learning initiative that will offer certificates to students demonstrating mastery of free MIT courses.

BYU Independent Study Online Program

BYU Independent Study is a nonprofit online educational program that offers more than 550 online courses—university, high school, middle school, and free noncredit courses—to students throughout the United States and in over 90 foreign countries. Enrollment is open to anyone, anytime of the year, with a full year to complete most courses.

American Public University

The American Public University System is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and is a member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. This university has been nationally recognized by the prestigious Sloan Consortium for best practices in online education. The programs offered by this university are very flexible, and students have an organized relationship with the classes and assignments. Courses will be held over 8 or 16 weeks, and class size is generally around 14 students.

University of Toledo Online program

Accredited online degree programs, backed by a university that has been around since 1872. World Campus offers 100% online degrees at the bachelor's, graduate, associate, and certificate levels. Every student receives personal support from a department dedicated to online students.

Liberty University

Liberty University is the largest Christian university in the world, with over 180 online programs from the certificate to doctoral level. They have been pioneering distance education since 1985, and have created a community of learners from around the world. As a Liberty student, you will have a strong support system and excellent student resources, including academic advisors, an online writing center, 24/7 access to online tutors, and online ministries.

REGIS University Online Program

Regis University, a Catholic university in the United States, deals with distance learning. The university offers a range of online courses in the social sciences. It should also be noted that the university is home to one of the world’s largest virtual academic libraries.  

University of Maryland Online Program

About a hundred undergraduate and postgraduate courses are offered through the University of Maryland’s online program. Online courses degrees are valid and equivalent to traditional degrees. The university has twenty different locations in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area to assist students in-person. All courses, however, can be taken entirely online and include 24/7 access to advisors.

Open Culture

This program, run by Dan Colman, seeks to collect all English-language educational programs and files on the Internet in one place and make them available for users. The breadth of programs and classes of this site is unique, including courses ranging from psychoanalysis to archeology, art, and technology. Through this platform, users can access iTunes and TED classes as well as courses from Harvard and New York University (NYU). In addition, the website provides students free access to a rich collection of e-books.

University of Phoenix

University of Phoenixoffers over 15 programs and over 50 concentrations. Students enrolled at University of Phoenix have the opportunity to earn associate, bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees. The University has more than 100 locations worldwide, in addition to a wide variety of degree programs and courses offered entirely online.

 

University of Alabama—Huntsville

University of Alabama-Huntsville, is a public institution, has been offering online bachelor's degree programs since 2006-2007. When applying for the online programs at University of Alabama--Huntsville, it's important to note that the deadline is April 15.

 

Northern Illinois University

At Northern Illinois University, a public institution, the majority of the online education classes are recorded and archived, so students can access the information on their own time. Ninety-four percent of students are already employed when they first enroll. The application deadline for online education degree programs at Northern Illinois University is rolling.

 

University of the people

University of the People (UoPeople) is the world’s first non-profit, tuition-free, accredited, online academic institution dedicated to opening access to higher education globally for all qualified individuals, despite financial, geographic or societal constraints. The non-profit UoPeople has managed to succeed in cutting down almost the entire cost of higher education, and does not charge for tuition or books/materials. All that is asked is for students to pay a one-time application processing fee ($50) and subsequent modest examination processing fees ($100) levied per course. There are no other fees whatsoever.

 

Colorado State University, global campus
