Letter from Birmingham Jail

Martin Luther King, Jr. wrote this letter in 1963 from the city jail in Birmingham, Alabama, where he was confined after being arrested for his leadership in a nonviolent civil rights campaign. In his letter, he argued that nonviolent direct action is necessary to achieve civil rights. He also asserted that civil disobedience to unjust laws was not only justified but a moral responsibility.
