This course, taught by Arsham Parsi, covers the past and current challenges facing LGBT people and examines measures to counter these challenges. Designed for members of the LGBT community, this course teaches participants the most effective ways to protect their safety and identity and to help other LGBT individuals. Social issues facing the LGBT community, including homophobia, acceptance in society, coming out to family members, and integrating with wider society are among the topics discussed in this course. One of the most important issues for LGBT health—sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) such as HIV/AIDS—will be explored in detail in Lesson 5. Given the obstacles and problems facing members of the LGBT community in Iran, asylum is examined as a potential solution to end or mitigate these problems. Procedures and mechanisms related to asylum will also be reviewed.
