On May 10, 1933, students across Nazi-ruled Germany burned tens of thousands of books. These book burnings marked the beginning of an era of censorship and widespread cultural repression by Adolf Hitler's government. In this short film, a Holocaust survivor, an Iranian writer, an American literary critic, and two historians describe the Nazi regime's book burnings and explain why totalitarian regimes target cultural pursuits in general and the literary field in particular.
