Collective bargaining is defined by the ILO as “the process of negotiation between workers and employers and their representatives concerning any issue related to terms and conditions of employment or any other matter of mutual interest to the workers and employer.” In the past the nature of male-dominated workplaces meant that collective bargaining tended to neglect issues specifically related to women such as maternity leave and unequal pay. This guide aims to promote gender equality and to end discrimination against women in the workplace by training employees, advocate, and trade union officials on collective bargaining. It outlines the key issues related to gender equality in the workplace and provides strategies for addressing them.
